Social Evenings
With the advent of the biking season now upon us, the numbers that attend our group weekend social rides begin to swell. With that in mind, here follows a brief refresher of group riding guidelines to make your ride safer and more enjoyable.
Pre-Ride Checks and Briefing
Carry out a POWER check that morning to ensure your bike is ready for the run.

Associates and visitors who have not yet ridden with the group should be directed to the ride leader who will brief them on group riding guidelines. They will be placed at positions within the group to observe how Test qualified members ride and with sufficient time to understand and observe the second rider dropping off to mark the route.
The ride leader will assess whether the group should be split due to size or ability or stay together for the ride.
A tail rider who rides at the back of the group will be appointed and he/she must be a full member.
The group will then be briefed by the ride leader with regard to weather, road conditions, the route and details of the next refreshments stop. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed. The ride leader will also advise whether overtakes within the group are acceptable.
Group dynamics during the ride
Where possible the group will ride in pairs in a staggered formation with a minimum of a two second gap between pairs of riders. When approaching a bend, riders will break out of the stagger and position themselves closer to the nearside or centreline to negotiate the bend, taking up their staggered pairs after the bend. In any event do not sacrifice safety for position. Do not ride line astern with less than a two second gap.
Where the route changes direction at junctions and roundabouts the ride leader will direct the second rider to a safe position nearby where the direction or correct exit can be indicated by arm signals and indicators. When everyone has negotiated the junction or roundabout, the tail rider signals the route marker to move off ahead.
This procedure continues for all junctions with all riders moving forward between the tail and lead riders.
At traffic lights in congested towns, where safely possible, the group should close up to negotiate the lights together.
If, during the ride, you have a problem - Don’t panic. Safely pull over and wait for the tail rider who will offer assistance where possible.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do. Ride within your own and your bike’s capabilities. It’s not a race and you must feel free to ride at your own pace without feeling pressured that you may be left behind.
Do. Rigidly observe the mandatory (Red Ring) speed limits.
Don’t. Offside. This is the practise of moving to the other side of the road to get a better view around lefthand bends. Offsiding is Not permitted on Group runs.
Don’t. Get suckered into following the rider in front of you, especially on overtakes. Do your own checks, make your own decisions and remember that your ride is your responsibility.
Do. Enjoy it and ride safe!
